Cathy Fooks Cathy Fooks talks health-care integration

What key elements do you need to ensure success in creating an integrated health system, and how far along is Ontario in achieving them? Change Foundation CEO Cathy Fooks provided a review of integrated health systems in six countries and across Canada during a recent OHA conference on The LHINs and the New Government, sponsored by The Courtyard Group. To see what work lies ahead for Ontario on the integration front, check out the information below.

Pollara to tap patient views on using system

Pollara Inc., Canadian experts on public opinion and market research, have come out on top in the Foundation's search for an innovative company to conduct regional focus groups on patient and family/caregiver experiences with our health-care system. The focus group research is tied to the Foundation's integration agenda to support seamless care in our system. Pollara consultants will conduct ten focus groups in five communities across Ontario, concentrating on frequent users of the health-care system, specifically people with chronic health conditions and their friends and families. A key aim will be to collect patient recommendations on easier navigation by identifying gaps that interfere with continuity of care. A final report of findings will be released this spring.

Foundation partners with Queen's U. on workshop probing adverse events in home and community care (in collaboration with the South East CCAC)

"Little is known about adverse events (AE) in home and community settings. As our population ages and the demand for such care increases, it will be critical that we have standardized definitions, understand the big problems and how to prevent them," says Paul Masotti, Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR), Queen's University.

The Change Foundation will partner with CHSPR to host a one-day (invitational) workshop in April exploring this topical issue in the South East region. "Our participation arises from the Foundation's quality improvement research agenda. You can't have quality care without safe care," says the Change Foundation's CEO, Cathy Fooks.

Last year, CHSPR organized a similar first dialogue on the topic. The Change Foundation will build upon these findings to define and guide future research.

Quality by Design conference to mine high performing health-care systems

What are integral elements of a high performing health system? Inquiring minds in Ontario health care want to know. That's why the Foundation will partner with Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (with research provided by the University of Toronto) to organize a conference on April 17. The Toronto event, Quality by Design: Learning from High Performing Healthcare Systems, will be attended by about 350 invited health-care leaders from home and abroad. Dynamic speakers will share experiences and case studies from notable health systems in Sweden, the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. Key themes include: integration and innovation, strategic uses of health information, improving patient experience, and system improvement. A book of proceedings will be published by Longwoods after the event.
